ILA Maintenance Training Program

MMMCA initiated the development of the ILA maintenance training program in 2005 in response to the need for technical training of the Port’s NYSA- and Metro-ILA maintenance workforce.

This program now offers over 40 courses in the fields of electrical, hydraulics, welding, refrigeration and automotive providing training in the most basic maintenance fundamentals to the most advanced technology in use in our industry.

Training benefits include:

    • Improved mechanic productivity
    • Reduced parts consumption
    • Reduced equipment downtime
    • Improved repair quality
    • Improved safety

Over the last 10 years, the program has conducted training for MMMCA, NYSA and 3rd party enrollees totaling:

  • Over 2,100 enrollees
  • Over 90,000 training hours
  • Over 55% of the Port’s maintenance workforce

Courses have increased from 6 in 2005 to over 40 today.  Current course descriptions are available from MMMCA and online @ www.porttechnicaltraining.com.

Tuition is charged for enrollees to attend the training courses.  Current tuition rates are available from MMMCA.

The following funding is provided to off-set tuition costs:

  • NYSA-ILA enrollees – reimbursement of straight-time wages, taxes and insurance
  • Metro-ILA enrollees – partial reimbursement of tuition costs through training grants awarded from the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development.  This reimbursement typically covers approximately 45-50% of tuition costs.  Since inception of the training program, MMMCA and its employers companies participating in the grants have been awarded over $1.3 million in training grants.

MMMCA’s contractor, Port Technical Training Institute (PTTI), operates the training program under MMMCA supervision.  PTTI is comprised of seasoned industry experts on all aspects of marine terminal maintenance.

MMMCA’s training facility, located at Expressport Plaza in Port Eilizabeth, NJ has:

  • 5,500 square feet of classroom and hands-on training area
  • State-of-the-art training aids and equipment to assist in the various courses

In addition, PTTI’s training approach tries to be as flexible as possible by:

  • Tailoring courses to specific needs of each employer
  • Utilizing equipment specifics (drawings, schematics, etc.) for each employer’s equipment type where possible
  • Training can also be arranged, in certain cases, on site in a specific employer’s facility.
  • Courses typically run between 1 and 8 days in length.  Longer courses typically are held one day per week to balance training efforts with the maintenance needs of the employers. This can be modified if requested.
